  • Life's Certainties

Some things in life are inevitable. The sun will rise in the east tomorrow, taxes will be due in April, and Budman will stick his foot in his mouth.Tragically, for the average inhabitant of this planet, the words from Bud’s mouth, like appeals for fiscal sanity in Washington, usually go unheard or unheeded…lost to history.Mercifully, there are moments when one is able to preserve his immortal words for posterity.

It was a typical Friday evening, and my wife and I were spending a quiet evening with my parents.Budman came down to join us and, between periodic calls from JMP, we were just sitting chatting.Having just eaten, the conversation naturally turned to the subject of meals – specifically what we normally ate. When Budman was queried as to his culinary preferences, he simply responded “Depends”. Exercising the keen wit that has served him so well in the world of business, my father alertly replied “I hope not!” This exchange resulted in a few groans and a little backpedalling by Budman, who assured us that while he concerned himself with fiber intake, depends were not a part of his diet.

We all moved on and nothing more would have come of it, had the conversation not taken another turn, as Bud mentioned that he hadn’t traveled further than the Trumansburg Shur Save in nearly 2 weeks.Upon our incredulous* questioning, Bud realized that he had slightly exaggerated the point, admitting that he did go to Wal-Mart in Watkins at least once a week.Being closer to monthly Wal-Mart shoppers ourselves, we inquired as to what Bud possibly could need that he had to purchase weekly from Wal-Mart.His response: “depends”.
